Pembrey Race Report

July 9th 2005

Led the heat from start with Damian Cottrell and Paul Tibbs chasing me, until the hose from the fuel pump detached and I drifted to a halt to watch the field pass by. At this point the race was red flagged, but I couldn't make it back to the grid for the restart, so Cottrell won from Tibbs and Jim Little.

Saturdays final was won by Maurice Hayden, ahead of Darren Blumson and Terry Roughton. Pete Morgan looked good for the win, but struggled with a mechanical problem and fell down the field.

I was on pole for the heat, and led from the start from Paul Wilson. On lap 4 Wilson gets round the outside in the hairpin. I'm sporting enough not to push him wide onto the grass, and wait until lap 6 to get back through at the hairpin as Wilson goes wide after we both lose traction on some oil. Lap 9 and we pass the first of the backmarkers, again on lap 12 we struggle through backmarkers and Wilson loses a place to Tibbs. I hold out the remaining laps for my first win after 4 years of trying, Wilson gets back past Tibbs, for 2nd and 3rd.

The final, I start OK but hold the inside line and get blocked, so a number of cars get past around the outside into the first corner. On lap 3 I get past Robbie Boon, and on lap 4 an XR2i (Al Kay?). I'm now chasing Matt Fincham. Bob Forman's car expires in the hairpin on lap 8, and on lap 10 I finally pass Fincham in Dibeni. I then run wide in Hatchets and Fincham passes back. We both pass a slowing Richard Kingsnorth, then later Gareth Wright, who has dropped his pace. Tibbs passes Little ahead. Fincham tries hard to pass Little but Little hold on to cross the line ahead. I'm 19th. The race was won by Steve Drewery, Darren Blumson and Terry Roughton in 2nd and 3rd.
